Watch: Umran Malik, widely considered one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket, sent down a 155 kph thunderbolt in the 18th over to dismiss Dasun Shanaka during the first India-Sri Lanka ODI in Mumbai. The Sri Lanka skipper’s wicket turned the tide of the game in India’s favour.
After the first three deliveries of the 17th over, it looked like Sri Lanka were in control: Shanaka had hit Umran for a six earlier in the over and the required run rate seemed to be in control, with Sri Lanka needing 34 runs off 21 balls in their chase of 163. At that moment, though, Umran cranked up the pace and got the better of the Sri Lanka captain. He bowled the ball on a length just outside off stump: Shanaka tried to force it over extra cover, but couldn’t get much out of it due to the pace, only managing to slice it straight to Yuzvendra Chahal inside the ring. That delivery was clocked at 155 kph.
Shanaka’s wicket changed the complexion of the game: he was the seventh batter to fall, and despite Harshal Patel leaking runs in the 19th over, India were able to nudge past the finish line. Prior to Shanaka’s dismissal, Umran also outwitted Charith Asalanka, inducing a top-edged pull after hurrying the left-handed batter into a stroke. India went on to win by two runs.
