Watch: India tail-ender Shivam Mavi smashed 14 runs off 3 balls in his first T20I innings, nearly propelling his side to an improbable victory against Sri Lanka.
Mavi, who made his debut in the opening game, found himself thrown into the deep end, with India six down chasing 207. With 49 needed off 15 balls, though, he decided to open up his shoulders. Dilshan Madushanka banged the ball in short outside off stump. Mavi, however, was waiting for it. He opened up his stance and smacked it over the deep square leg fence. A ball later, Mavi capitalized on a full delivery and carved it over extra cover for a boundary. With the pressure on Madushanka, he decided to bowl the slower delivery, only to see Mavi hold his shape long enough and pump it into the sightscreen for a maximum.
In the end, Mavi’s blitzkreig was not enough to haul India past the finish line. Despite the youngster’s best efforts, India fell short by 16 runs. The series is now tied at 1-1, with the final game of the series slated to be played at Rajkot on January 7.
