Watch: Indian captain Rohit Sharma danced down the wicket to clatter a six off Kasun Rajitha during a quickfire against Sri Lanka on his comeback innings, earning applause from former captain Virat Kohli.

Rohit, who missed the T20I leg of Sri Lanka’s tour due to a thumb injury, returned to lead the ODI side in the first game of the three-match series, in Guwahati. Having announced before the game that he will be opening with Shubman Gill – and not Ishan Kishan, who hit a historic double ton in his last ODI – Rohit brought up his 47th one-day fifty.

At the time of writing, the team had reached 194-2 in 26.2 overs, with Kohli on 25 and Shreyas Iyer on 14. Dasun Shanaka trapped Gill leg-before for a 60-ball 70, while Rohit edged one from Dilshan Madushanka on to the stumps, for a 67-ball 83.

Along the way, Rohit launched two sixes in a 17-run over from Rajitha. He cleared the deep mid-wicket fence twice to help India to a rapid start. The first six was typical of Rohit’s leg-side assaults, standing tall and pulling the ball away in style. The second one brought back memories of a younger Rohit, dancing down the track as he took on the short ball and clanked it for an 80-metre six.

Seated in the dressing room, Kohli applauded the stroke.
