Joe Root reverse ramp dismissal

Watch: Joe Root was dismissed in familiar fashion during the second Test against England at Lord's today (August 29), falling to a reverse ramp off a fast bowler, much like his infamous dismissal in the Rajkot Test against India earlier this year.

Having batted brilliantly all day after two quick wickets fell in the morning session of the Lord's Test, Root brought out his trademark reverse ramp, being well set at 143 and looking on towards a potential double hundred.

However, it turned out his confidence was misplaced as the length ball by Milan Rathnayake ended up being too close to Root's body to control properly. He ended up scooping it straight up in the air to be caught safely at gully by Pathum Nissanka.

Earlier this year, during the Rajkot Test against India, Root reverse ramped Jasprit Bumrah straight into Yashasvi Jaiswal's hands at second slip when England were in a strong position. It led to a collapse and England ended up losing the Test comfortably.

Heavy criticism followed that dismissal, in the wake of which Root had abandoned the shot until he pulled it out during the West Indies Test series at Trent Bridge. While he was successful in that attempt, getting a boundary off Shamar Joseph, fortune didn't favour him at Lord's today.

Before the frustrating dismissal, however, Root had played a superlative knock, anchoring England's innings through day one even as wickets fell regularly at the other end. No other England batter in the top seven went past 40, before Gus Atkinson joined Root for a 92-run seventh-wicket partnership which saw England cross 300 before Root was dismissed.

In the course of his 33rd Test hundred, Root broke and equalled several records, including but not limited to becoming England's joint-highest century-maker in men's Tests.
