Responding to Sri Lanka’s 531 – the highest in Test history to not include an individual hundred – Bangladesh started well but were not allowed to get away with the game as the Sri Lanka fast bowling duo of Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando made regular strikes to peg back their top order.
Kumara first dismissed Mahmudul Hasan Joy with an in-angler from wide of the stumps that went through pat and bad and crashed into the top of middle and leg. Joy was dismissed for 21 in the 13th over just before stumps on day two.

Just as Zakir Hasan crossed fifty and started to look assured at the crease, he was undone by a Fernando in-swinger that caught him on the crease and ripped through his defences. Zakir’s was the second wicket to fall, for the score of 96.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed by Prabath Jayasuriya cheaply before Fernando smashed the stumps again. This time, the victim was the nightwatchman Taijul Islam, who inside-edged a drive onto his stumps, having faced 61 deliveries and scored 21.
At 105-4, Bangladesh had squandered a solid start and eventually folded for 178, 353 behind Sri Lanka’s first innings score.
