Chasing 511, Najmul Hossain Shanto came out to bat at No.3 at the fall of Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s wicket. Having faced more than 50 balls and got himself set, Shanto started to look comfortable at the crease when Kumara came up with a ripper.
On the second ball of the 27th over, bowling from around the wicket, Lahiru Kumara angled a back-of-length ball into the left-handed Shanto before it pitched and straightened ever so slightly to beat his outside edge and trim the off bail, sending the Bangladesh captain packing for 20.
The rest of the Bangladesh middle order fought hard to keep Bangladesh in the game, but no big score except Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 81 not out meant that they were bowled out for 318, losing the game by 192 runs.
Kumara took three more wickets in the innings, finishing with figures of 4-50 in 13 overs. With this victory, Sri Lanka jumped to third on the WTC points table, joining New Zealand, while Bangladesh slipped to joint-seventh.
