In the first Test of the two-match series, at Sylhet, Sri Lanka rode on a 202-run sixth-wicket stand between Dhananjaya de Silva (102) and Kamindu Mendis (102) to reach 280 after they were 57-5. For Bangladesh, Khaled Ahmed claimed 3-72 and debutant Nahid Rana 3-87.
In response, Bangladesh folded for 188 against Vishwa Fernando (4-48), Kasun Rajitha (3-56), and Lahiru Kumara (3-31). For them, Taijul Islam top-scored with 47.
Yet again Sri Lanka lost their first five wickets early, by 113, and were 126-6 when Mendis joined de Silva on the third morning. They took the score to 233 when Khaled ran in to bowl at de Silva, then on 84.
Instead of releasing the ball, Khaled tried to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end with a backhand flick. He missed in his attempts, but had he hit, he would have caught Mendis, then on 49, out of his ground.
Sri Lanka were 374-9 at the time of writing, with Mendis having gone past a hundred for the second time in the match. De Silva also scored a hundred and became the 15th captain to score two centuries in the same Test match (Ricky Ponting has done it thrice).
