Watch: Mitchell Starc’s attempted off-cutter ended up flying over the batter’s head, on its way to the boundary rope during the third Australia-Sri Lanka T20I in Canberra.
The ‘moon ball’ was delivered in the 18th over of Sri Lanka’s innings, with Dasun Shanaka on strike. Starc’s attempt at an off-cutter saw the ball slip out of his hand, soaring over the batter’s head before eventually reaching the boundary. Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade tried to make ground and stop the 110.3kph delivery before its first bounce, but the ball landed in front of him, jumping past Wade to run away for four. The umpire promptly called it a no-ball.
Replays showed that the height of the sailing ball in line with the stumps was approximately three metres, with Wade himself carrying a look of bewilderment on his face.
Starc ended up wicketless off his four overs, as Sri Lanka limped to 121-6. Australia chased down the target with ease to seal the series.
