Watch: Wiaan Mulder’s throw hit Babar Azam on the shinbone during the second Test match between South Africa and Pakistan, at Cape Town.
Having already qualified for the 2023-25 World Test Championship final, South Africa amassed 615 after Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bat in the second Test of the two-match series at Newlands. Ryan Rickelton rewrote a record or two with his 259, while Bavuma made 106 and Kyle Verreynne 100. For the tourists, Mohammad Abbas claimed 3-64 and Salman Ali Agha 3-148.
Kagiso Rabada (3-55) then led the rout as Pakistan were shot out for 194. Opening batting for the first time with Test cricket after a horrific injury had put Saim Ayub out of action, Babar top-scored with 58.
Pakistan responded better after Bavuma enforced the follow-on. Captain Shan Masood (102 not out) and Babar (81) put on 205 for the first wicket. Pakistan ended the third day on 213-1, requiring another 208 to make South Africa bat again.
The Babar-Masood stand in the second innings probably took a toll on the South African fast bowlers, who had to resume immediately after bowling for 54.2 overs in the first innings.
Pakistan were 141-0 when Mulder ran in to bowl at Babar, who played the ball back to the bowler. Mulder picked the ball up and aimed for the stumps. The throw missed and hit Babar on the shin. As the umpires stepped in to intervene, the stump mic caught Mulder uttering “you were out of your crease!”
