Pakistan's players gather around teammate Sufiyan Muqeem (2L) as they celebrate after victory in the third one day international (ODI) cricket match batween South Africa and Pakistan at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on December 22, 2024

Pakistan won their three-match ODI series against South Africa 3-0 with a win in the final games in Johannesburg. Here's what their clean-sweep has done to the ICC Men's ODI team rankings.

South Africa succumbed to their first-ever whitewash in the bilateral ODI series after losing to Pakistan by 36 runs in a rain-curtailed game at the Wanderers. Saim Ayub continued his rapid start in ODIs with a second hundred of the series besides picking up 1-34 with the ball. Their new spin sensation Sufiyan Muqueem took 4-25 to power the visitors to the historic victory. The momentous occasion came weeks after winning an ODI series in Australia for the first time in 22 years.

This was the third time Pakistan won an ODI bilateral series in South Africa. The loss meant South Africa have only won one out of three ODI series in 2024, with a series loss against Afghanistan earlier in the year. The tourists on the other hand recorded their fifth successive bilateral series win after beating New Zealand, Afghanistan, Australia and Zimbabwe.

Updated ICC Men's ODI team rankings after the third SA v PAK ODI:

Pakistan entered the series with 106 rating points. The historic 3-0 clean sweep gave them a boost of five points, bringing them closer to second-placed South Africa, who have 111 to their tally. South Africa on the other hand, cling onto their fourth position despite three defeats in a row.

Zimbabwe slipped out of the top 12 after their 2-0 home series loss against Afghanistan, who in turn strengthened their hold at eighth with 86 rating points. The hosts are placed at 13th, the same as 12th-ranked Scotland. Notably, they dropped a place owing to fewer overall points.
