Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi achieved a rare treble in international cricket during the first T20I against South Africa in Durban on Tuesday (December 10).
South Africa chose to bat first in the series opener, but were put under the pump quickly as Shaheen struck in the very first over to get rid of Rassie van der Dussen, before Abrar Ahmed accounted for Reeza Hendricks and Matthew Breetzke within the powerplay to leave them 28-3.
The hosts' innings was held together by a magnificent 82 off 40 balls from David Miller, who was eventually undone by a Shaheen slower ball before George Linde, recalled after three years out of the side, slammed 48 off 24 balls to lift his side to 183-9.

Pakistan eventually lost, but Shaheen finished with three wickets in the first innings, adding Nqabayomzi Peter to his list of victims in the 16th over. That was his 100th wicket in T20 international cricket, meaning the left-armer has now hit that mark in each of the three international formats – joining an elite list of players.
Mark Taylor is not pleased with Mohammed Siraj's tendency to celebrappeal, calling it "disrespectful".

But more serious for Siraj is the threat of sanctions for it in ICC's Code of Conduct 😲

100-wicket treble: Shaheen Afridi becomes youngest ever to achieve all-format feat
Shaheen is just the fourth player ever to achieve this feat. All four are men, since women's Test matches have not been organised regularly enough for even one player to take 100 wickets in that format.
The first player to do so is Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga, who completed the treble on September 6, 2019 with his 100th T20I wicket. He had made it to 100 Test wickets and 100 ODI wickets within 10 days of each other, in August 2010. Malinga just about squeezed into the list, as he never played another Test after the one which helped take him past the three-figure mark.

The other two players to do this are Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan and New Zealand's Tim Southee, in August and October 2021 respectively. Southee is the only player to have over 300 Test wickets, 200 ODI wickets and 100 T20I wickets. In an interesting coincidence, Shaheen completed this feat on December 11, 2024 in New Zealand's time zone – Southee's 36th birthday.
Of these four, Shaheen is by far the youngest and quickest to the mark, in terms of matches played. Malinga was 36, Shakib 34 and Southee 32 years old when they did it. Shaheen is aged just 24 years and 248 days.
Each of the previous three also needed over 300 matches to complete the treble, with Shaheen taking just 161. Of course, this is mostly down to Shaheen being able to play a healthy number T20Is from the start of his career – a privilege the others did not have in their era.
Player | Team | Test wickets | ODI wickets | T20I wickets | Age when completed | Matches taken |
Lasith Malinga | Sri Lanka | 101 | 338 | 107 | 36y 9d | 332 |
Shakib Al Hasan | Bangladesh | 246 | 317 | 149 | 34y 138d | 357 |
Tim Southee | New Zealand | 389 | 221 | 164 | 32y 319d | 306 |
Shaheen Shah Afridi | Pakistan | 116 | 112 | 100 | 24y 248d | 161 |
