Maia Bouchier became the 14th woman to make a century on Test debut in the one-off South Africa-England Test at Bloemfontein, and just the fourth in the last 20 years. Here’s the full list of those to achieve the rare feat.
Bouchier’s knock continued a fine start to international cricket in general, and helped to overturn a lean run of recent form. Having come in for criticism for two slow knocks in the Women’s T20 World Cup, against West Indies and South Africa, the two teams to finish above England in their group, she was without a fifty on England’s tour of South Africa, but returned to form in style with a stroke-filled, brisk century, the fastest by an England batter in the format, and the fourth fastest overall.
However, the record didn’t stand for long, with Nat Sciver-Brunt taking the world record with her hundred at better than a run a ball soon after.
Bouchier had beaten the record of Jan Brittin, who brought up three figures in 137 balls against Australia in Perth in 1984. Bouchier’s hundred came up from 124 balls, with Sri Lanka’s Chamani Seneviratna and India’s Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma the three quicker to the landmark before Bouchier.
She helped drive a strong England start, with Sciver-Brunt racing past fifty to propel England over 200 with just two wickets down.
Bouchier’s Test debut has already been a successful one, though she will hope recent history doesn’t repeat itself. None of the last three centurions on women’s Test debut played another Test match.
West Indies’ Nadine George tonned up in 2004, with her country yet to play a Test since. Mignon du Preez brought up three figures for South Africa in 2014, with the Proteas only recently ending a long stretch without playing a women’s Test.
Alice Davidson-Richards is a different case, making 107 against South Africa at Taunton in 2022. While England have played several Tests since then, injuries and the emergence of a crop of young batters mean she is yet to play another, though at 30 years old she will retain hope of coming again in international cricket.
Bouchier was dismissed for 126 off 154, nicking a drive off Nonkululeko Mlaba to slip.
