Against South Africa at Chennai, India became the first team to breach the 600-run mark in the history of women’s Test cricket.

India declared on 603-6 on day two (June 29) of the only Test against South Africa, the highest total in the history of women’s Test cricket. They eclipsed Australia’s 575-9 from earlier this year at Perth, also against South Africa.

Mandhana, Verma break records

Smriti Mandhana (149 in 161 balls) and Shafali Verma (205 in 197) had set a plethora of records in women’s Test cricket on day one.

Verma smashed the fastest hundred and double-hundred in the format as well as the most sixes in an innings, while Mandhana hit the fastest hundred. They also put up 292, the second-highest stand for any wicket.

Jemimah Rodrigues (55), Harmanpreet Kaur, and Richa Ghosh had taken India to 525-4 by stumps. They had already gone past 467, their highest ever total, against England and Taunton in 2002. They had also scored the most runs by one team in a single day in Test cricket across gender.

On the second morning, in the 110th over of the innings, Ghosh cut Annerie Dercksen to take India to 579-4, a new world record total in the format.

Kaur eventually fell for 69 and Ghosh for 86. India, having become the first team to breach the 600-run mark in the format, declared at the fall of Ghosh’s wicket, on 603-6. India scored at an astonishing 5.23 across 115.1 overs – the fastest by any team to over an innings lasting 20 overs.

South Africa were 236-4 at stumps on day two with Marizanne Kapp (69) and Nadine de Klerk (27) at the crease. They need another 168 to avoid the follow-on. Over the course of her innings, Kapp went past Jennifer Gove’s career aggregate of 256 runs. Kapp’s 281 runs are the most for South Africa in women’s Tests.
