Watch: Dean Elgar succumbed to an unusual dismissal after failing to stop a James Anderson delivery that pinged on his thigh pad, bounced off his arm, and rolled onto his stumps on day two of the England-South Africa Lord’s Test.
Elgar, the South Africa captain, had built a steady opening partnership alongside Sarel Erwee at that point, with the visitors placed at 85-0 in the 23rd over. Elgar was on 47 from 80 balls when a ball from Anderson angled towards the leg-stump and hit him on his thigh pad. Then – in a bizarre moment of misfortune – it bounced off the protective equipment and hit the side of Elgar’s arm and rolled away to disturb the stumps.
Elgar could do little – a belated attempt to tap the ball away came too late – as the ball had just enough momentum to knock both bails off. He held his head up in dismay as non-striker Erwee expressed his disbelief. Around them, the England fielders converged to celebrate their first breakthrough of the day.
Earlier in the day, England, resuming on 116-6, were bowled out for 165, with Rabada claiming three of the remaining four wickets to finish with figures of 5-52.
