Here are our marks out of 10 for England after their 1-1 ODI series draw against South Africa.
Jonny Bairstow – 7
91 runs @ 45.5, SR: 92.85
Contributed a half-century in the series opener and, upon reflection, his 28 in the second ODI was a significant contribution in a low-scoring game.
Joe Root – 7
87 runs @ 43.5, SR: 108.75
Did his best to keep England afloat for most of their chase in the first ODI, eventually perishing for 86.
Sam Curran – 7
53 runs @ 26.5, SR: 147.22; 2 wickets @ 44.5, ER: 5.56
Curran starred with a Player-of-the-Match performance in the second ODI, smashing a vital 35 off just 18 balls before bowling David Miller in South Africa’s reply.
David Willey – 7
2 wickets @ 14, ER: 3.5; 21 runs @ 21, SR: 100
A fine series for the left-armer, who went at just 3.5 runs an over. Since his omission from England’s 2019 World Cup squad, he has taken 28 ODI wickets at just 19.17.
Reece Topley – 7
2 wickets @ 25.5, ER: 5.66
Burst through South Africa’s top order in the second ODI to set England on the path to victory.
Liam Livingstone – 6
48 runs @ 24, SR: 120; 2 wickets @ 19.5, ER: 7.80
A substantial score has eluded him so far this summer, but he still managed to top score with 38 in England’s win at Old Trafford.
Adil Rashid – 6
4 wickets @ 32, ER: 5.81
Expensive in the first ODI but back to his best in the second, where he picked up figures of 3-29, his best in ODIs since 2019.
Brydon Carse – 5
1 wicket @ 46, ER: 5.11
Only featured in the first ODI, where he was England’s most economical bowler as South Africa put up an imposing 333-5.
Jason Roy – 4
57 runs @ 28.5, SR: 77.02
By his standards, there was a pedestrian 43 in the first ODI. Has had a difficult summer at home for England across the two white-ball forms, averaging 19 from eight innings.
Jos Buttler – 4
31 runs @ 15.5, SR: 79.48
Has struggled for runs since taking on the full-time captaincy. Pulled off a magical bit of work behind the stumps to run out Aiden Markram in the second ODI.
Phil Salt – 4
17 runs @ 17, SR: 170
Just the one innings for Salt, who came in at No.3 after Ben Stokes’ retirement.
Moeen Ali – 4
9 runs @ 4.5, SR: 69.23; 3 wickets @ 37, ER: 5.45
Tidy with the ball but couldn’t take advantage of a promotion in the batting order in the second ODI.
Matt Potts – 2
ER: 8.25
Made his ODI debut in the first match but was forced off after four overs due to the extreme heat.
Ben Stokes – 2
5 runs @ 5, SR: 45.45; ER: 8.8
Didn’t have a fairytale finish to his ODI career. Expensive with the ball and was out lbw trying to reverse sweep Markram’s part-time spin.
