It was an historic day for the former Australian Test captain. In making a century, he overtook Michael Clarke to become the fourth all-time leading run scorer for Australia, and also scored his 1,000th Test run at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
He brought up the milestone with a powerful pull shot that went for four. He then celebrated in customary fashion, removing his helmet and saluting to all four corners of his home crowd at Sydney.
Smith is averaging exactly 60 for this summer, which almost exactly matches his career average of 60.89, with 30 centuries and 39 half-centuries.
His century followed on from Usman Khawaja’s as the two hometown heroes piled on a 209-run partnership as South Africa’s miserable tour continued.
Australia are already two-nil up in three-match series and look well set to make it a clean sweep.
