South Africa were in the midst of a collapse at 132-5 when Marco Jansen, on two at the time, was out caught by Cameron Green off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.
South Africa had recovered from 27-4 to 125-4 thanks to a 98-run partnership between Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreyne, but they would lose their final six wickets for just 27 runs.
Jansen had faced 19 balls for his two runs and facing an increasing amount of pressure went for the big shot. All of which had been called and predicted by Ricky Ponting.
“Nathan Lyon’s halfway through his fourth over now,” said Pointing, “they’ve only given up the eight runs and they’ve got mid-on three-quarters of the way back. They’re tempting him with a build-up of pressure to try and hit over the top.”
Sure enough, as Ponting stopped talking and Lyon delivered his ball, Jansen advanced down the track and spooned the ball up in the air where he was caught in the legside by Green.
The Test at the Gabba is the first of a three-match series between the two sides.
