In the opening match of SA20 2025, Delano Potgieter produced a fine all-round performance – 5-10 and 25* (12) – to power MI Cape Town to a comprehensive win against defending Champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Batting first MICT put 174-7 on the board, with a much-needed 29-ball 57 from Dewald Brevis followed by Potgieter's unbeaten 25 off 12, including two fours and a six from No.9.
The all-rounder followed up his blazing cameo with a five-wicket haul to derail Eastern Cape’s chase. From 49-4, the two-time champions slipped to 50-7, thanks to Potgieter’s three wickets in the space of five balls in the 11th over. He removed Beyers Swanepoel (1), David Bedingham (0) and Aiden Markram (19) off the first, third and fifth deliveries.
MI eventually won the match by 97 runs when Potgieter castled Richard Gleeson for a duck to wrap up the innings.
Potgieter’s figures of 5-10 off three overs are now the second-best in the tournament’s history. He trails Eastern Cape’s Roelof van der Merwe, who took 6-20 in a group fixture against Durban Super Giants in the inaugural season in 2023.

What is Potgieter's domestic record?
Born in Port Elizabeth, Potgieter, 28, is a South African all-rounder, who made his domestic debut for Gauteng in 2015. Besides being a fast bowler, Potgieter is a left-handed middle-order batter with an impressive record. He was part of Gauteng's 2018 Africa T20 Cup campaign, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, with 217 runs at an average of 43.40. Potgieter's nine wickets were also the joint-third highest that year.
Overall, Potgieter has 39 wickets at an average of 16.10 and an economy of 7.38 in T20s besides scoring 1,025 runs at 29.28 and a strike rate of 130.40. He has represented MICT in 12 matches so far across the SA20 seasons. His other stint in franchise cricket came for Jozi Stars in the 2019-20 edition of the defunct Mzansi Super League. Potgieter only played a match, failing to make a mark.
He also ended the 2018-19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge as Gauteng's leading wicket-taker, with 17 scalps from nine matches.
Of all the formats, first-class cricket is where Potgieter has really thrived. His 117 wickets have come at an average of 22.64. The batting numbers make an impressive reading as well: 1,894 runs at 37.13. Of those, 1,746 have come at 46.95 in his last seven seasons.
Potgieter was the batting hero for the Lions in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 final against Western Province last year. After being reduced to 35-5 on the first morning, Potgieter’s 81 off 106 helped the Lions reach 225. Then climbing an 87-run first-innings deficit, Potgieter struck an unbeaten 155 off 244, setting Western Province a target of 308 and claiming a 99-run victory.
