Watch: India Test captain Rohit Sharma's return to domestic cricket did not go well, as he was dismissed for three against Jammu and Kashmir.

The ongoing round of the Ranji Trophy is in sharp focus, thanks to the confirmed participation of several Indian internationals – following a policy document circulated among centrally contracted players which outlined domestic cricket as "mandatory". Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are all in action during this round.

At the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai, the home side took on Jammu & Kashmir, with Rohit and Jaiswal, India's Test openers, opening the batting after skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bat.

Jaiswal was the first to go, trapped lbw by Auqib Nabi in the third over of the innings for four. Just three overs later, Rohit fell as well, for three – attempting a half-hearted pull shot, a top edge lobbed up in the air for a simple catch at cover.

It continued a poor run of form with the bat, as Rohit managed just 31 runs in three matches across the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But more concerningly, it continued a recent pattern of dismissals in this fashion – indecisive on the pull shot, in sharp contrast to the majority of his career.

Rohit was out in an almost identical manner during the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne (caught at mid-on), and also in the final Test of India's home series against New Zealand (caught at mid-wicket).
