Shreyas Iyer double century in Ranji Trophy game for Mumbai against Odisha

Shreyas Iyer converted his second consecutive Ranji Trophy century into a double hundred on day two (November 7) of the Mumbai-Odisha clash at the BKC ground in Mumbai.

Iyer had scored a 101-ball century on the first day, finishing unbeaten on 152 as Mumbai raced off to 385-3 against a toothless Odisha bowling attack. He then came back on day two and resumed just where he had left off, reaching his double hundred in just 201 balls.

Iyer was finally stumped off the bolwing of Harshit Rathod for a 228-ball 233, a knock that included 24 fours and as many as nine sixes. This was Iyer's third double century in first-class cricket, with the last one having come seven years back in 2017, when he was representing India A against a touring Australian side. The only other occasion when Iyer has crossed 200 in first-class cricket, was in 2015 against Punjab.

All three of Iyer's first-class double centuries have come in Mumbai, but each in a different venue. The first one came at the Wankhede Stadium, the second at the Brabourne Stadium, and the latest one that he scored today has come at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in Bandra-Kurla Complex. Unsurprisingly, each of his 200-plus knocks have come at a quick rate, with the slowest being his double ton against the Australians, which came at a strike rate of 96.19.

Shreyas Iyer's highest first-class scores

Score Balls Strike Rate Fours Sixes Opposition Venue Date
233 228 102.19 24 9 Odisha BKC, Mumbai 7/11/24
202* 210 96.19 27 7 Australians Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai 19/2/17
200 176 113.63 25 5 Punjab Wankhede, Mumbai 9/10/15

Iyer has been in a rich vein of form lately. Having been ignored for the recently concluded home season, where India won 2-0 against Bangladesh and lost 0-3 against New Zealand, Iyer was also overlooked for the upcoming Australian Test tour. In fact, he wasn't even considered for the India A squad that is playing a two-unofficial Test seres against Australia A.

Despite the repeated snubs, and all the off-field chatter around him missing Mumbai's previous Ranji fixture against Tripura and not being retained by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, Iyer has gone from strength to strength with the bat.

Iyer's last India appearance came in the three-match ODI series that India lost in Sri Lanka three months back. His last Test match was against England, earlier this year, where he made 27 and 29 in Visakhapatnam. Currently, his Test stats read 811 runs at 36.86 from 14 games with one hundred and five fifties.

With the Indian Test team starting to go into a transition period, Iyer would want to make this a bumper season and force his way back into the side.
