The umpiring in the Ranji Trophy came under the scanner on Friday (January 24), as Mumbai's Shreyas Iyer was given not out despite an apparent edge through to the keeper.

In the penultimate round of group stage matches in the Ranji Trophy, Mumbai faced off against Jammu & Kashmir at the Bandra-Kurla complex in Mumbai. They chose to bat first, but were bowled out 120 despite welcoming back India internationals Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma into the top of the order, needing a half-century from Shardul Thakur to rescue the innings.

J&K managed to take an 86-run lead, eventually being bowled out on day two. Opener Shubham Khajuria top-scored with 53, and Abid Mushtaq hit a brisk 44 from No.7.

Jaiswal and Rohit started well on day two, putting on 54 – but Mumbai lost three wickets for three runs in three overs, bringing Shreyas Iyer to the crease at the end of the 16th over.

Shreyas Iyer given not out despite apparent edge

Off his fifth ball, Iyer tried to drive pacer Umar Nazir through covers, but the ball went through to keeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan. Bowler, keeper, and the close-in fielders went up in unison, celebrating even before umpire S Ravi had raised the finger – as though Iyer had edged it.

The umpire did not move though, and Iyer did not move from the batting crease either, much to the disbelief of the J&K players. Television replays after the incident appeared to show a loud noise as the ball passed the bat, but Iyer survived. The decision came in for severe criticism on social media.

Iyer eventually perishes in identical fashion

In the end, Iyer only batted on for another 11 balls, before nicking Auqib Nabi through to Wadhawan. Once again, the umpire did not raise the finger immediately, instead waiting a couple of seconds to ensure that the catch had been taken cleanly behind the stumps.

Iyer, as he had previously, did not budge until the umpires conferred and eventually gave him the signal to return to the dressing room. That left Mumbai at 86-4, and Shivam Dube went four balls later to reduce them to 86-5 at lunch, with the scores level.
