B Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur impressed on day one of the second round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy

The second round of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy season kicked off on October 18. Here are all the updates from the opening day.

Elite Group A

After being asked to bat first, Tripura lost two wickets for 29 runs against Meghalaya before bad light stopped play.

After resuming the day at 29-2, Tripura lost opener Jiwanjot Singh for eight. Sridam Paul hit a commendable 178-ball 146, with support from captain Mandeep Singh (59). The tourists were 338-6 when bad light stopped play.

Having lost to Baroda in the opening round, Mumbai dominated the proceedings against Maharashtra, bowling them out for 126. Shardul Thakur set the tone in his first over by dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Sachin Dhas, both for ducks. Mohit Avasthi and Shams Mulani took three wickets apiece. In response, 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre struck a century to give his side a 94-run lead. Shreyas Iyer also looked good for his 45 not out off 59 balls.

Fielding first, Services reduced Baroda to 35-3 before opener Shivalik Sharma and No.5 batter Vishnu Solanki stitched an unbeaten 214-run partnership to take Baroda to safety without any further hiccups. Shivalik is batting on 120, while Solanki is on 102.

In Cuttack, Jammu Kashmir scored 270 in their first innings against Odisha, thanks to Abdul Samad's 117-ball 127. Left-arm spinner Sumit Sharma, who picked up a five-wicket haul, was the pick of the Odisha bowlers. Auqib Nabi gave J & K their first breakthrough, dismissing Shantanu Mishra for a duck.

Elite Group B

Against Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat slipped to 203-8. However, a counter-attacking 72-ball 59 from Arzan Nagwaswalla stretched their total. Nagwaswalla will start day two along with captain Chintan Gaja, who finished unbeaten on 38 off 88 balls. Lalith Mohan scalped thrice for Andhra Pradesh.

After being put in to bat, Mahipal Lomror (89*) and Yash Kothari (84) helped Rajasthan to score 304-7 against Himachal Pradesh. Left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar shone with 4-83 for Himachal Pradesh.

At stumps, Uttarakhand reached 313-8, thanks to Avneesh Sudha's 131-ball 89 and Aditya Tare's quickfire 69 off 73 balls.

Yash Rathod's 118 off 196 rescued Vidarbha from an initial collapse. They were teetering at 14-4 at one stage after twin blows each from Gaurav Yadav and Udeshi. But Rathod's rescue act along with Harsh Dubey's unbeaten 69 took them to stumps at 261-8.

Elite Group C

At Lucknow, Haryana scored 242-6 on day one against Uttar Pradesh. The lion's share of runs were scored by Himanshu Rana's 176-ball 114, including 14 fours and a six. Shivam Sharma (3-46) was the best bowler.

After electing to bat, Punjab were in a spot of bother against Madhya Pradesh, slipping to 48-5. In a period of consolidation, Sahil Arora (101*) joined hands with No.9 Sukhwinder Singh (64*) to rescue the innings. The hosts finished on 254-7. All Madhya Pradesh bowlers were amongst the wickets, with Kumar Kartikeya picking up 2-43.

While no play was possible on day one of the Bengal-Bihar match due to rain and a wet outfield, the rain-affected Kerala-Karnataka fixture had a delayed start, with Kerala reaching 88 for no loss after day one.

Elite Group D

Tamil Nadu piled on the misery on Delhi on the opening day, racking up 379-1. B Sai Sudharsan cashed in on his rich vein of form, finishing unbeaten on 202 along with Washington Sundar (96*). Navdeep Saini was the sole wicket-taker for Delhi.

At Rajkot, Chattishgarh ended on 236-2, with their top four amongst the runs. Ayush Pandey (52), AG Tiwary (44), Sanjeet Desai (81*) and Amandeep Khare (57*) chipped in with the bat. Navneet Vohra and Parth Bhut were the two wicket-takers for Saurashtra.

Opting to bat first, Assam were reduced to 89-4 before captain Sumit Ghadigaonkar stitched a 126-run stand with Mukhtar Hussain, who hit a run-a-ball 55 to resurrect the innings. Ghadigaonkar took Assam to 249-8 at stumps, finishing unbeaten on a 123-ball 41.

Jharkhand are in the driver's seat against Railways with a collective batting display. Virat Singh (103*) and captain Ishan Kishan (101) slammed centuries, while opener Md Nazim scored 96. Himanshu Sangwan took four of the five wickets.
