The first round of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy season kicked off on October 11. Here are all the updates from day one.

Elite Group A

In Group A, defending champions Mumbai took the field against Baroda, who they beat in the quarterfinals last year. Seamers Shardul Thakur and Mohit Avasthi gave them a couple of early breakthroughs before spin twins Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian picked up two apiece. Baroda wicketkeeper Mitesh Patel struck 86, and Atit Sheth was unbeaten on 60 at the end of the day.

Jammu & Kashmir opener Shubham Khajuria stole the show against Maharashtra, batting the whole day to remain unbeaten on 130, with his side 264-5 at stumps.

Services made the most of being put in to bat by Meghalaya, reaching 298-4 by stumps thanks to Ravi Chauhan (113) and Rajat Paliwal (86*).

No play was possible on day one between Tripura and Odisha, due to rain and a wet outfield.

Himachal Pradesh's batters dominated proceedings against Uttarakhand, making their way to an imposing 300-1 by the end of the day. Openers Shubham Arora and Prashant Chopra both scored tons, with the latter still unbeaten. No.3 Ankit Kalsi also helped himself to an unbeaten half-century at stumps.

Rajasthan's bowlers chipped away gradually at Puducherry as Khaleel Ahmed, Aniket Choudhary and the impressive Manav Suthar all took two wickets. Opener Ajay Rohera was unbeaten on 84 at stumps and with his side nine down, could end up carrying his bat tomorrow.

Last season's finalists Vidarbha were blown away by Andhra Pradesh for just 118, with captain Akshay Wadkar's unbeaten 46 the only semblance of resistance. By stumps, Andhra trailed by just four runs having lost a single wicket – Hanuma Vihari for one.

A deceptively strong Madhya Pradesh batting lineup received a few early jolts from Karnataka's pace battery of Vasuki Koushik, Prasidh Krishna and Vijaykumar Vyshak but recovered later on thanks to Harpreet Singh Bhatia (75*), Shubham Sharma (40) and Rajat Patidar (31). For Karnataka, 18-year-old left-arm spinner Hardik Raj contributed by picking up the wicket of Patidar while his senior spin partner Shreyas Gopal was a touch on the expensive side.

In Lucknow, Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran failed to build on his good form in the Irani Cup and Duleep Trophy and strengthen his case to be India's backup Test opener, falling to Yash Dayal for five even as fellow opener Sudip Chatterjee and No.3 Sudip Kumar Gharani scored 116 and 90 respectively.

Despite cruising at 212-1 at one stage, Bengal soon came undone as leg spinner Vipraj Nigam returned figures of 4-59 in 16 overs to trigger a slide to 269-7 by stumps.

A total of 17 wickets fell in Rohtak, staring with Haryana blowing Bihar away for just 78 as opening bowlers Anshul Kamboj and Aman Kumar combined for 5-35 in 16 overs. They took the lead with little trouble, but then found themselves 184-7 by the end of the day.

Only 39 overs of play were possible in Thumba, but that was enough for Kerala to take five wickets against Punjab. Aditya Sarwate took three of them – Abhay Choudhary, Naman Dhir and Prabhsimran Singh – for 30 runs.
