During the semi-final of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, Vidarbha left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey overtook India legend Bishan Singh Bedi on the list for most wickets in a single season of the competition.
Dubey came into the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Mumbai with 59 wickets in the season. He had already broken Aditya Sarwate’s Vidarbha record of 55 wickets from the 2018-19 season.
After Vidarbha posted 383, Mumbai seemed comfortably placed at 113-2 before Parth Rekhade rocked them with three wickets in five balls. At the other end, Dubey trapped Shams Mulani leg-before. On the third morning, he bowled Mohit Avasthi to finish with 2-68 as Mumbai conceded a 113-run lead.
In Mumbai's second innings, Dubey took the first two wickets – Ayush Mhatre and Siddesh Lad – by the end of day four. On the fifth morning, he struck again to get rid of Shivam Dube. Dubey's fourth scalp of the innings, opener Akash Anand, was his 65th of the season, taking him past the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi's tally of 64 in the 1974-75 season.
He also took the last Mumbai wicket to fall, Mohit Avasthi. Only Ashutosh Aman (68 in 2018-19) and Jaydev Unadkat (67 in 2019-20) have taken more than Dubey in a single Ranji season, and five wickets in the final against Kerala will see him claim the record.
Dubey’s 66 wickets are well clear of Auqib Nabi’s 44, the next name on the charts for the 2024-25 season. Before the semi-final, Dubey had 8-121 against Andhra, 5-73 against Puducherry, 8-120 against Uttarakhand, 11-107 against Himachal Pradesh, 3-131 against Gujarat, 10-132 against Rajasthan, 8-114 against Hyderabad, and 4-91 in the quarter-final against Tamil Nadu.
