Shardul Thakur bowling for India during the WTC

Mumbai achieved one of the biggest wins in Ranji Trophy history, subjecting Meghalaya to an innings and 456-run defeat during the final round in BKC, Mumbai.

Meghalaya's second innings finished on 129 all out, giving Mumbai the third-biggest innings win in the Ranji Trophy – their best ever – and helping secure seven points in the process.

Shardul Thakur shines, again

Shardul Thakur capped off a brilliant all-round performance with four wickets in the second innings, tearing through Meghalaya's top order, while Tanush Kotian provided a late burst with a four-wicket haul to clean up the tail. Shams Mulani and Sylvester D'Souza also took a wicket apiece.

Earlier, Mumbai secured a mammoth 585-run lead, declaring on 671-7 in the first innings in response to Meghalaya's 86 all out. It included three centuries: Siddesh Lad (145), Akash Anand (103) and Shams Mulani (100*), with Thakur smashing a 42-ball 84 to further bolster his chances of an India comeback.

It might not seem so, but Meghalaya's first innings total of 86 was due to a commendable late-order recovery: at one point, the team had lost their first six wickets for just two runs, the worst start to a first-class innings in 152 years. Thakur led the charge with a four-wicket haul, with Avasthi claiming three, D'Souza two and Mulani one.

Meghalaya have now lost six out of six matches, while Mumbai are now placed third in Elite Group A, behind J&K and Baroda. Meghalaya are the only team to not gain any points across the four Elite Groups.

Mumbai's win is now the third-biggest innings victory in the Ranji Trophy, and joint 17th in all first-class matches. The biggest innings win, incidentally, was also achieved this season when Goa beat Arunachal Pradesh in the Plate division in November.
