India's Test stars had a difficult return to domestic cricket on Thursday (January 23), falling for low scores on day one of the latest round of the Ranji Trophy.

The latest round of Ranji Trophy fixtures got underway on Thursday, with renewed interest in the competition thanks to the participation of several of India's Test stars. But four of them in particular had a difficult day out, following a disappointing tour of Australia which ended earlier this month.

Rohit Sharma (Mumbai)

Opening the innings for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir, Rohit found the going tough against opening bowler Umar Nazir, missing out on two loose deliveries before he played a half-hearted pull shot, only to top-edge the ball and spoon a simple catch to cover for three. It continued a wretched run of form for him, following a haul of 31 runs in five innings Down Under.

Rohit was also dismissed in almost-identical fashion in the Mumbai Test against New Zealand and the Melbourne Test against Australia.

Shubman Gill (Punjab)

Captaining Punjab, and opening the innings after his side was sent in to bat against Karnataka, Gill began in cautious fashion against Vasuki Koushik and Abhilash Shetty, but did not last long. In the fourth over, left-arm seamer Abhilash got one to shape in from over the wicket – taking the inside edge of his bat before keeper KL Shrijith completed a good catch, ending Gill's knock at just four.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (Mumbai)

Jaiswal, like Rohit, was drafted into the Mumbai side against J&K – the pair's arrival keeping prolific teenager Ayush Mhatre out of the XI. He was the first to go in the innings, trapped in front by Auqib Nabi for four, although there was a hint of doubt about the decision. Jaiswal was India's standout batter in Australia, and with little cricket to look forward to in the next month or so for him, the Ranji Trophy will be important in terms of staying among the runs.

Rishabh Pant (Delhi)

Pant showed flashes of his briliance in Australia, particularly during phases in Melbourne and in the third innings of the Sydney Test, where he took on Scott Boland. However, his return to domestic cricket was not as promising. Walking in at 84-3 in the 24th over against Saurashtra, he lasted just 10 balls and scored one, caught on the boundary after attempting to sweep spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.

Even if these four players failed to make an impact, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was in action against Delhi and picked up two wickets in the first session – dismissing Sanat Sangwan and Yash Dhull.
