Pakistan beat West Indies by 127 runs in the first Test between the sides in Multan, helping them move further away from their opponents at the bottom of the World Test Championship table.
The first session of this Test was lost to fog, which also delayed the toss until the originally scheduled lunch time. The hosts eventually chose to bat first on a wicket that was expected to take turn from very early on.
West Indies opened the bowling with left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie and reduced Pakistan to 46-4 before a stellar 141-run stand between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan pulled them out of danger. They eventually posted 230, as the last six wickets went down for 43 runs.
Sajid Khan and Noman Ali then took over, sharing nine wickets between them to bowl West Indies out for just 137, earning their side a 93-run lead. The tourists' top three scorers in the innings were No.s, 9, 10 and 11. By the end of day two, Pakistan had made their way to 109-3.
Day three moved at breakneck speed as Jomel Warrican starred with the ball, and Pakistan lost seven wickets in the first session to set West Indies 251 for victory. On this wicket, there was virtually no chance for them as they slid to 37-4 and 54-5, before being bowled out for 123. The last four wickets fell at the same score.
Updated World Test Championship standings after Pakistan beat West Indies
The win has helped Pakistan put a bit more daylight between themselves and their opponents at the foot of the WTC points table, in a series which has little significance beyond deciding the destination of the wooden spoon.
A win in the second Test of this series will help Pakistan overtake Bangladesh and finish in sixth place.
