England have defeated Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Here are the updated World Test Championship standings after the win.
England created several records during their mammoth batting innings, notching up more than 800 for just the third time in their history. Led by a triple ton by Harry Brook and a double ton from Joe Root, England batted 150 overs, going at nearly 5.5 runs an over to post the massive total.
Pakistan made 556-10 in their first innings with three centurions, including one from Shan Masood for the first time in over four years. However, they would not have anticipated what would follow, with their bowlers looking lacklustre. As many as six bowlers conceded over 100 runs as England maximised the flat conditions.
Having taken a lead of 267 runs, England reduced Pakistan to 82-6 in the second innings. With Abrar Ahmed hospitalised and not able to bat, England needed just three more wickets for a memorable win. Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal offered some resistance, putting together a 109-run stand, but after that stand was broken by Jack Leach, England quickly wrapped up victory.
The win has solidified England’s fourth-placed spot in the World Test Championship standings, with Pakistan slipping to the bottom of the table after their 11th straight winless Test at home, a record for them.
Updated WTC points table: Pakistan slip to last spot
Pakistan have played eight Tests in the current WTC cycle, winning just two and losing six. They have also been deducted eight points due to slow over-rate. It has taken them to No.9 in the table, slipping below West Indies, who have a points percentage (PCT) of 18.52%.
England, on the other hand, are No.4 with a PCT of 45.59%. They have been penalised 19 points for slow over-rate during the 2023-25 WTC, without which they would have had a PCT of 54.90%.
