England completed an extraordinary victory over Pakistan, winning by an innings and 47 runs in Multan despite conceding over 500 runs in the first innings.

Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood and Salman Agha all scored centuries after Pakistan elected to bat first on a flat pitch. Saud Shakeel also scored 82 before he was dismissed by Shoaib Bashir, and Pakistan reached 556 by the time they were bowled out on day two.

However, despite dismissing Ollie Pope for a duck in the first over of England's innings, their chances of victory rapidly decreased as England batted them into the ground. Joe Root and Harry Brook both scored double centuries, Brook reaching a triple - the first England player to do so since 1990.

The pair put on England's highest-ever partnership of 454, before England declared on 823-7 - their highest post-war total. In response, Pakistan slipped to 82-6 by the end of day four before Agha and Aamer Jamal gave them some hope of eking out a draw.

That was crushed, though, when England rattled through the remaining three wickets they had to take - Abrar Ahmed unable to bat through illness - in the span of six overs before lunch on day five. Those wickets sealed another remarkable win for England in Pakistan and put them 1-0 up in the series.

While Pakistan aren't the first side to post over 550 runs in a Test defeat, they are the first to do so and lose by an innings. In fact, they are the first side to score over 500 and lose by an innings. The previous highest total in an innings defeat was Ireland's 492 against Sri Lanka in Galle last year.

Before the Multan Test, the largest margin of loss by a side who scored over 550 in terms of runs was 92 - again Pakistan but against Australia in 1972 - and in terms of wickets seven, Bangladesh losing to New Zealand in 2017.

Pakistan also lost after scoring more runs in England's victory in Rawalpindi in the first Test match of the 2022 tour. On that occasion, England scored 657 batting first, before Pakistan responded with 579. England then set-up a declaration and bowled Pakistan out to win by 74 runs.

Pakistan are also the side to have scored more than 550 runs in an innings and lost on the most occasions. They've done so three times, with Australia and Bangladesh having done so twice, and England and New Zealand once each.
