Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan (L) plays a shot during the final day of the second Test cricket match between Bangladesh and Pakistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on December 8, 2021.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that the second fixture of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh in Karachi will be held behind closed doors due to renovation work at the stadium.

The decision was taken due to ongoing construction work at the National Stadium in Karachi as the venue is being prepared for the ICC Champions Trophy next year.

PCB released a statement, saying, "We understand the vital role that our passionate spectators play in cricket, providing inspiration and motivation to our players. However, the health and safety of our fans is our utmost priority. After careful consideration of all available options, we have decided that the safest course of action is to hold the second Test in front of an empty stadium."

The board confirmed that ticket sales have been suspended for the Test match, scheduled between August 30 and September 3.

"Fans who have already purchased tickets will receive a full refund automatically, with the amount credited to the account details provided at the time of purchase,” the statement added. "While we deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause, we want to assure our valued fans that the ongoing stadium upgrades are aimed at enhancing their experience. The renovations are part of our commitment to making the venue more spectator-friendly and preparing it for the Champions Trophy."

The 2025 Champions Trophy will be the first major global tournament in Pakistan since a ban was put in place after terrorists attacked Sri Lanka’s team bus amid a Test match in Lahore.

They were given the hosting rights for the 2023 Asia Cup, but India refused to travel to their neighbouring country due to political tension, leading to a “hybrid model” in which they played all their games in Sri Lanka, including the final. Several reports have claimed India are reluctant to travel to Pakistan for the tournament next year as part of their long-standing stance. A similar "hybrid model" could be formulated if that comes true.

Pakistan will play two tests against Bangladesh with the opening match in Rawalpindi from August 21.
