Tom Latham was dismissed for a duck in Lahore today (February 10), playing in the second match of the ODI tri-series between New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan, leaving him one away from equalling the most amount of consecutive ducks by a player in men's ODIs.
Latham came in at No.5 in New Zealand's chase of 305, with 54 runs still needed off 70 balls to secure victory. Daryl Mitchell had been dismissed the ball before, enticed down the track by South Africa's Senuran Muthusamy and caught at long on by Wiaan Mulder. Latham came out to join Kane Williamson in the middle, who had already reached his 14th ODI century.
However, facing his first ball at the crease, Latham was struck on the pad by a full delivery from Muthusamy. After the umpire gave it not out, South Africa reviewed the decision, which immediately showed no bat or glove involved and showed the ball to be crashing fully into off-stump on ball-tracking. Latham had to turn back around and head back to the dressing room for a golden duck.
The duck is Latham's third in as many ODI innings. On Saturday (February 8), Latham was dismissed for a three-ball duck in the opening match of the tri-series against Pakistan. He was caught at short mid-wicket by Kamran Ghulam off a delivery from Haris Rauf to leave New Zealand 135-4. In the previous ODI he played before that game, Latham was again out for a duck against Sri Lanka, having faced four balls on that occasion.
The third consecutive duck means that Latham is now one duck away from equalling the most ducks scored in consecutive innings of all time in men's ODIs. The only players who have scored more than three consecutive ducks in the format are Gus Logie, Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Henry Olonga, Craig White and Lasith Malinga, all of whom recorded four consecutive ducks at one point in their careers.
New Zealand went on to win the tri-series match against South Africa, meaning they are two wins from two matches so far in the series. They will contest the final against the winner of the match on Wednesday (February 12) between Pakistan and South Africa.
