Matthew Breetzke

Matthew Breetzke followed his 150 on debut with 83 in his second match to set a new world record in men’s ODIs.

In the first ODI of the Pakistan Tri-Nation Series, against New Zealand at Lahore, Breetzke entered the record books by becoming the first batter to hit 150 on men’s ODI debut. Breetzke’s effort eclipsed Desmond Haynes’ 148, a record that had stood since 1978.

All eyes were on Breetzke in his second game, against Pakistan at Karachi, especially once he reached fifty. However, he fell 17 runs short of becoming the first cricketer to score hundreds in each of his first two ODIs. However, a hundred in his next ODI innings (third of his career) will make him only the third, after Nick Knight and Mohammad Shahzad, to score two hundreds in their first three innings.

While he did not get that second hundred, Breetzke’s 83 was enough to get him another world record – the most runs after two ODI innings. In fact, his 233 runs are well clear of Haynes’s 195.

In fact, even if Breetzke falls for a duck in his next outing, he will finish fifth on the list of most runs after three ODI innings, after Knight (264), Temba Bavuma (259), Allan Lamb (252), and Shahzad (244).
