Australia and Pakistan last met in January this year, in the final match of a three-Test series Down Under, which the hosts won 3-0. In the ODI format, it has been over a year since their last face-off – at the 2023 World Cup, a 259-run opening stand between David Warner and Mitchell Marsh set up a 62-run Australian win in Bengaluru.

Australia have named a strong squad for the series, which comes just ahead of the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. Pat Cummins has returned to lead the team, with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa all involved. They named their XI for the first match of the series a day in advance, as follows: Matt Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Steve Smith, Josh Inglis (wk), Marnus Labuschagne, Aaron Hardie, Glenn Maxwell, Sean Abbott, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.
Pakistan will be led by Mohammad Rizwan, who was announced as the new white-ball captain just last week. They also announced their playing XI for the first ODI a day in advance. Batter Muhammad Irfan Khan is set to make his ODI debut, with Kamran Ghulam set to play just his second ODI. They have gone in with a four-man pace attack in Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain.
