On the fifth ball of the 11th over, Babar looked to flick away a fullish delivery that came in sharply. However, he was unable to get any contact as the ball went onto strike him on the front pad. Cummins immediately went up in appeal but the on-field deemed it not out, seemingly suggesting the bat hit the ball first before the pad.
Australia took the DRS and after the third umpire was satisfied it was pad first, Babar’s on-field decision was reversed after ball-tracking showed three reds.
It was the third time in as many Tests that Cummins had dismissed Babar after sending down a dream delivery in the previous Test at the MCG.
Babar, who had gotten off to a steady start at the SCG, was dismissed for a 40-ball 26 as Pakistan fell to 39-3. They were soon 47-4 but half-centuries from Mohammad Rizwan, Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal took the visitors to 313.
Cummins went on to pick a five-for, getting to the feat for the third successive time in a Test innings.
