After being decimated by Josh Hazlewood’s fiery spell, including a three-wicket maiden on day three, Pakistan couldn’t add much to their overnight score of 68-7. Nathan Lyon handed the first blow to the tourists in the morning, getting Mohammad Rizwan caught at leg slip for 28 off 57 balls while bowling around the wicket.
Pat Cummins followed that up by forcing Aamir Jamal to hole out to Travis Head, standing at square leg. Jamal, who was dismissed for 18, had an outstanding match as he scored a rampant 82 in the first innings before picking 6-69 with the ball. The tourists were bundled out for 115 in the second innings as Lyon cleaned up the final wicket in the form of Hassan Ali. Australia were set a target of 130 which included a first innings lead of 14.
The visitors gave Warner a guard of honour as he walked in the middle for the one last time in the format with his opening partner and childhood friend Usman Khawaja. However, Australia lost Khawaja for a first-over duck. Warner’s last hurrah ended with a 75-ball 57, comprising seven boundaries. He received a rousing send-off from the SCG crowd after being dismissed by Sajid Khan on 57. Marnus Labuschagne’s unbeaten on 62 off 73 balls and Steve Smith’s 4 off 1 ensured the hosts got over the line without any further hiccups. Australia won the match by eight wickets, and subsequently clean-swept the series 3-0.
They climbed to the top of the WTC rankings for the 2023-25 cycle, owing to the New Year’s Test victory. They have won five out of eight matches with a points tally of 54 and a points percentage of 56.25.
