Taking on Yorkshire at The Oval, Surrey captain Rory Burns won the toss and elected to field first, with the prospect of rain looming. James Taylor struck early, removing Finlay Bean in the third over before the skies opened up with Yorkshire 31-1 in six overs. Upon resumption, the game was reduced to 49 overs a side.
In the 12th over of the innings, Shan Masood knocked a length delivery from Conor McKerr deep into the offside. Masood completed the first run and sprinted back for a second, covering nearly three-fourths the length of the pitch before turning back, having realised that his partner, William Luxton, had been ball-watching and had not responded to his call.
Harry Brook has stated he isn't aiming to become England's white-ball captain, despite uncertainty surrounding the future of current skipper Jos Buttler.

As it happened, Luxton turned to start the second run as Masood approached the striker's end, but turned once again as the throw from the deep reached the gloves of Surrey keeper Josh Blake. Luxton slipped and fell, stranded in the middle of the pitch.

But Blake (perhaps focused on Masood), failed to remove the bails at the striker's end, instead lobbing it to a fielder at the bowler's end. By the time his throw reached that end, Masood had made his ground there, and Luxton had recovered to get in at the striker's end, bringing an end to a comedy of errors.
Blake was eventually involved in Masood's dismissal, as he took the catch to dismiss Pakistan's Test captain, off the bowling of McKerr in the 16th over.
