Ajinkya Rahane county cricket

Ajinkya Rahane scored a half-century in his maiden innings for Leicestershire in the One Day Cup today (July 24), making 71 out of the reigning champions' total of 369-6 against Nottinghamshire.

Rahane has joined Leicestershire for the second half of the English domestic season and will be available for the whole of their One-Day Cup campaign as well as five County Championship matches. He previously had a deal with the county last summer before he was recalled to India's Test squad. He hasn't featured for India since their tour of the West Indies last year. He has played in English domestic cricket previously, playing for Hampshire in 2019.

Making his debut at Grace Road today, he came in with Leicestershire 174-2 in the 27th over. Not wasting any time on a good wicket, his half-century came off 38 balls, reaching the milestone with a drive to deep extra cover. He went on to make 71 off 60 balls before slapping a full toss from Lyndon James to long on in the 48th over of the innings.

However, Leicestershire still went on to make a total well in excess of 300, posting 369-6 off their 50 overs. Leicestershire secured a memorable victory in the competition last year, beating Hampshire by two runs in a tense final. It was the club's first List A trophy since 1985.

Rahane isn't the only overseas player with Test match pedigree in the Leicestershire squad. Peter Handscomb also featured in their opening match, having represented the county since last year.
