Pakistan and New Zealand set a new record for a men's ODI in New Zealand today (March 29), racking up 70 extras between them.
New Zealand endured an early collapse in the first ODI of the three match series. Having been put in by Pakistan in Napier, they were 50-3 after debutant Akif Javed struck twice in his first five overs of international cricket. However, a century from Mark Chapman and half centuries from both Daryl Mitchell and Muhammad Abbas meant the hosts passed 300 with ease.
After a late-innings collapse, Pakistan were set a target of 345 to win. More notable, however, was the innings extras count, which was at 43 from the 50 overs. Pakistan had conceded seven byes, 13 leg byes and bowled two no balls, as well as a whopping 21 wides.

While New Zealand weren't quite as wayward in their bowling innings, they also conceded a significant number of extras, with the end-of-innings count sitting at 27. Pakistan were well off their target despite a 78 from Babar Azam and a half-century from Salman Agha. The Black Caps bowled 14 wides in their innings, along with conceding five leg byes, and eight byes. Pakistan were bowled out for 271 in 44.1 overs.
Altogether, 70 extras were conceded in the game, which is a new record for a men's ODI held in New Zealand, and for one involving New Zealand and Pakistan. The overall record, however, still belongs to a match from 1999 between Scotland and Pakistan, in which there were 96 extras conceded. Fifty-nine of those extras alone were conceded by Pakistan in that game.
Curiously, four of the top five entries on this list are from matches at the 1999 men's ODI World Cup.
