Mark Chapman walks back after his century in the first Pakistan ODI

New Zealand batter Mark Chapman has been ruled out of the second ODI versus Pakistan, scheduled for April 2.

Chapman, 30, has been ruled out of the second ODI in Hamilton after suffering from a hamstring injury. He received the injury while fielding during the first ODI, and had to subsequently head for scans. An MRI revealed a grade one tear, which, according to a New Zealand Cricket press release, will require "a short period of rehabilitation".

Chapman starred for the hosts in the opening ODI, hitting a career-best 132 off 111, the fourth-highest score by a New Zealand No.4. New Zealand won the match by 73 runs, with Nathan Smith picking a four-wicket haul.

Head coach Gary Stead described his injury as minor, hoping for a quick recovery: “It’s obviously disappointing news for Mark, after a really special innings in the opening ODI in Napier. We’re thankful that the hamstring injury is only minor so we’re hopeful that Mark will be able to complete his rehabilitation and be available for the final match of the summer in the Mount.”

Seifert to replace Chapman

Tim Seifert has been called up as a replacement for the second ODI. A highly experienced T20I batter, Seifert has played just three ODIs so far, the last of which came back in January 2019.

“With several new faces in this squad it’s great to be able to call on a player of Tim’s experience,” Stead said.

“He’s in good form after a great T20 series and he provides another strong top-order batting option heading into an important match tomorrow.”

Seifert was comfortably the highest run-getter in the T20Is preceding the ODIs, smashing 249 runs from five innings at a strike rate of 207.50. It included a career best 97* in a record-breaking chase.

New Zealand are leading the three-match ODI series 1-0.
