Muhammad Abbas, who was making his debut against Pakistan today (March 29), scored a fifty in just 24 balls, the fastest by a player in his first ODI.

The 21-year-old was picked for the three-match ODI series with several first-choice players unavailable due to IPL commitments. The Wellington all-rounder is the son of medium-pacer Azhar Abbas, who played domestic cricket in Pakistan between 1994/95 to 2003/04.

He was one of five debutants in the New Zealand-Pakistan clash, with teammate Nick Kelly also playing his first ODI. From Pakistan, Akif Javed, Mohammad Ali and Usman Khan were playing their first games in the format.

Abbas walked out to bat at No.6 in the first innings and got going immediately, making 12 in his first six balls. It was pure carnage thereafter, as he brought up his fifty in the next 18 deliveries, hitting three sixes and as many fours. He made 19 runs in the 49th over against Naseem Shah, hitting him for two maximums and a four, as New Zealand neared the 350-run mark.

Ali eventually dismissed Abbas on the last ball of the innings for a 26-ball 52, as his team ended on 344-9.

It was the fastest fifty on debut in ODI history, also becoming just the third to the feat in fewer than 30 deliveries. The previous record belonged to Krunal Pandya, who had made his maiden fifty in his first ODI in just 26 balls against England in 2021.

Abbas also took a wicket with his left-arm medium pace, sending back Mohammad Rizwan for 30, to cap off a memorable outing.
