New Zealand rose to fourth place on the WTC points table after their humongous win against England at the Seddon Park.
New Zealand beat England by 423 runs, their joint-biggest margin of victory in terms of runs, in the third Test of the three-match series, at the Seddon Park in Hamilton. England, however, won the series 2-1 and kept the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy in its inaugural edition.
With 12 points from the Hamilton Test, New Zealand’s PCT increased to 48.21, enough for them to secure fourth place on the 2023-25 World Test Championship points table, at least for now. England, however, dropped to sixth place, with 43.21. Both teams are done with their Test matches in the league stage, and are out of the race for a berth in the World Test Championship final.
Updated WTC points table after the New Zealand-England series
Two teams who can overtake New Zealand are Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Sri Lanka need to beat Australia 1-0 (which will take them to 48.72) or better. However, a 1-1 draw will keep Sri Lanka to 46.15.
Pakistan, on the other hand, have four Tests left – two in South Africa and two against the West Indies at home. They need to win all four to reach 52.38. However, even one draw will bring that down to 47.62, below New Zealand’s 48.21.
India, meanwhile, are guaranteed to finish on at least 48.25 and South Africa 52.78 – above New Zealand. Australia, however, may drop up to 44.74 (46.49 if the Brisbane Test ends in a draw) – at least mathematically, though for that they need to lose each of their remaining Tests.
England, meanwhile, are guaranteed to finish above both the West Indies (can reach a maximum of 35.90) and Bangladesh (finished with 31.25). However, Sri Lanka may drop below them, and we have seen, Pakistan can overtake them.
