Joe Root notched another all-time record on England's way to victory on the fourth and final day of the Christchurch Test.
England completed an eight-wicket victory to start the series as Brydon Carse and Jacob Bethell grabbed the headlines on the final day.
Carse finished the New Zealand second innings with career-best figures of 6-42 and a match haul of 10-106 – the first ten-wicket match haul by an English seamer in an overseas Test side since Ryan Sidebottom achieved the feat at Hamilton 16 years ago.
After bowling New Zealand for 254, England required 104 for victory, a target they hauled down in 12.4 overs despite the early loss of Zak Crawley for one. Crawley's dismissal prompted Ben Duckett and then Jacob Bethell to take the attack to the New Zealand seamers. Duckett scored 27 off 18 balls before Bethell went on to register an unbeaten fifty on Test debut, scoring the winning runs in the process.
He was accompanied at the end by Joe Root. The former England captain also scored at a brisk rate, finishing unbeaten on 23 off 15 balls.
When Root reached 18, he broke Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record for runs scored in the fourth innings of Test matches, doing so in 11 fewer innings than the India great.
Alastair Cook, Graeme Smith and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are next on the list behind Tendulkar.
