New Zealand player rating after series loss against England

Down 0-2, New Zealand registered a consolation victory in the final Test against England in Hamilton. Here are Wisden’s player ratings for the home side.

Tom Latham: 5/10

171 runs @ 28.50; HS: 63, one fifty

Fresh from the highs of beating India in their own backyard in his maiden stint as permanent captain, Latham had a series to forget - both as a leader and a batter. He started decently with a 47 in Christchurch but lost his way thereafter before capping his series off with 63 and 19 in Hamilton.

Devon Conway: 1/10

21 runs @ 5.25; HS: 11

Conway’s struggle in 2024 continues, with his average this year dropping to 21.44 in nine matches. He played the first two Tests and returned 2, 8, 11 and 0 before going on paternity leave.

Kane Williamson: 9/10

395 runs @ 65.83; HS: 156, one hundred, two fifties

Having recovered from a groin injury, Williamson finished as the leading run-scorer of the series. He also achieved several landmarks across the three Tests: At Christchurch, Williamson became the first New Zealand player to score 9,000 runs and his hundred in Hamilton was his seventh in 12 Tests, the joint-fifth on the list of batters with the most centuries at a single venue.

Will Young: 7/10

102 runs @ 51; HS: 60, one fifty

Player of the Series in the historic series win in India, Young had to make way for Williamson in the playing XI. Conway’s unavailability freed up a spot for the dead rubber and he didn’t disappoint, scoring 42 and 60 in New Zealand's massive victory.

Rachin Ravindra: 4/10

129 runs @ 21.50; HS: 44

Like his peers, Ravindra too faced contrasting fortunes from the preceding series. After being the Black Caps’ only centurion during the India tour, the stylish southpaw failed to hit a single fifty in his six innings.

Daryl Mitchell: 6/10

215 runs @ 35.83; HS: 84, two fifties

Mitchell was inconsistent throughout the series. An 84 in Christchurch and a 60 in Hamilton were pretty much it for him. That he still finished as New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer suggests their batting has underfired.

Tom Blundell: 6.5/10

213 runs @ 42.60; HS: 115, one hundred

Battling a lean run, Blundell bounced back to form with a 149-ball 115 in Wellington, albeit in a losing cause while chasing 583 in the fourth innings. An unbeaten 44 off 55 in the third Test was his other noteworthy innings.

Glenn Phillips: 4/10

117 runs @ 29.25; HS: 58*, one fifty

One wicket @ 142; BBI: 1-75

Phillips began with an unbeaten 58 at No.7 but his performance fizzled out thereafter. His off-spin was ineffective on the seam-friendly conditions.

Mitchell Santner: 8/10

125 runs @ 62.50; HS: 76, one fifty

Seven wickets @ 13.14; BBI: 4-85

Like the India tour, Santner played only once, taking the Player of the Match award. Earlier in Pune, he took 7-53 and 6-104 after previously never taking more than three wickets in a single innings. In Hamilton, having sat out for the first two matches of the series, he came in and contributed with a brilliant all-round performance.

Nathan Smith: 5/10

80 runs @ 20; HS: 42

Seven wickets @ 48.42; BBI: 4-86

In the two matches he played, the all-rounder showed signs of promise with the ball despite his overall series numbers. A 51-ball 42 in the second innings in Wellington was his only contribution with the bat.

Tim Southee: 3/10

Six wickets @ 54.33; BBI: 2-34

New Zealand's elimination from the 2023-25 World Test Championship final race meant the third Test was Southee’s last, a decision he made before the series. Despite a middling outing and a disappointing overall result, he can leave with his head held high as New Zealand’s second-highest wicket-taker (391) in the format.

Matt Henry: 8.5/10

15 wickets @ 23.26; BBI: 4-48

Henry finished as the highest wicket-taker behind Brydon Carse’s tally of 18. He has successfully fulfilled the role of the lead seamer for quite some time now, finishing the calendar year with the most wickets – 48 wickets at 18.58 – for New Zealand.

Will O'Rourke: 6/10

10 wickets @ 38.80; BBI: 3-33

A mixed series for the fast bowler with a couple of good spells, including a three-wicket haul which skittled the visitors to 143 in response to New Zealnad’s 347 in the first innings. Despite a minor blip in a rapid start to his Test career, the towering O'Rourke’s emergence is expected to continue.
