Joe Root celebrates after reach a century at the Basin Reserve

Joe Root reached his 36th Test century today (December 8), on the morning of day three of the second Test between England and New Zealand at the Basin Reserve.

Having secured a lead of 533 runs at the close of play on day two, England decided to bat on at the start of the morning session on day three, with Joe Root not out overnight on 73. It took him just over seven overs to reach three figures, doing so with his now trademark Root reverse-ramp.

Root has been previously criticised for playing the shot in delicate situations but, even with his hundred at stake, there was little precarious about England's position in the match to mitigate for him playing it. The shot almost had him in trouble, however, the ball coming off the glove and going over Tom Blundell, with Root ending up on the floor. Nevertheless, the boundary gave Root his 36th Test century, and moved him up a place on the all-time list for the most centuries scored in men's Tests.

The England great now sits in joint fifth position on the list, tied with Rahul Dravid. Dravid isn't the highest India player on the list, however, with Sachin Tendulkar occupying the top spot. He is another 15 centuries clear of Root, with Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis in his sights in between.

After securing his century, Root was only able to last three more balls. He got a thick edge on a ball from Will O'Rourke and was caught behind by Blundell. That triggered England's declaration, setting New Zealand a target of 583 to win. It would be the highest ever fourth innings run-chase in Test cricket if they were to chase it down.
