Gus Atkinson walks off the field after taking a Test hat-trick

Gus Atkinson became the 14th Englishman to claim a men's Test hat-trick on the second morning of the second New Zealand-England Test at Wellington.

Atkinson's hat-trick capped off an excellent England performance with the ball. The hosts resumed day two on 86-5, still trailing England by 194.

It didn't take long for the tourists to make further inroads with Brydon Carse dismissing both Tom Blundell and Will O'Rourke in the fourth over of the morning.

After brief resistance from Glenn Phillips and Nathan Smith, Atkinson brought about a dramatic end to the New Zealand innings, dismissing Smith, Matt Henry and Tim Southee in successive deliveries.

Smith was dismissed leaving the ball, to a delivery that bounced more than he anticipated, cannoning off his gloves and into the stumps. Henry was outdone by a hostile bouncer that he could only fend to Ben Duckett at gully while Tim Southee was duped by a field that telegraphed another short ball but was instead lbw playing back to a fuller delivery.

That left New Zealand all out for 125, 155 runs behind England's first innings total.

The hat-trick was the 15th by an England bowler in a men's Test and the first since Moeen Ali claimed one against South Africa at the Kia Oval in 2017. In total, it's the 47th hat-trick in men's Test cricket.
