Watch: Naseem Shah gave Pakistan a much-needed breakthrough with the scalp of centurion Devon Conway, taking out his off stump with a seaming beauty in the second ODI in Karachi.
It proved to be a tough day for Pakistan’s bowlers up until the 30th over, as Conway – along with Kane Williamson – piled on a 181-run stand for the second wicket, laying the platform for a potentially healthy total. Naseem re-entered the fray for his second spell in the 28th over, giving away six runs, but the batters pressed on the pedal in the following over, extracting 14 runs off Usama Mir. Naseem continued from the other end, finally giving the hosts a breakthrough with the final ball of the 30th.
Bowling from over the wicket, Naseem seamed one past Conway’s bat and took out the off stump. The delivery was clocked at 140.9 kph, and ended Conway’s innings on 101, his second century in the format.
The dismissal seemingly opened doors for Pakistan to make a comeback. Three overs later, Mohammad Nawaz snared two wickets in the same over to send back Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham. By the 35th over, the tourists had slipped to 205-5, with Nawaz also accounting for Kane Williamson on 85. Soon, New Zealand were 220-7.
In the previous ODI, Naseem had picked a five-wicket haul, his second in a row in the format.
