England captain Ben Stokes was granted a second life while batting on day three of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s after Colin de Grandhomme was called for bowling a no-ball.

With the hosts chasing 277, Stokes walked out to bat in the afternoon session after his side had been reduced to 69-4. Stokes routinely advanced down the track during the start of his innings, and repeated the move from the 19th ball of his innings.

De Grandhomme was the bowler, and Stokes’ advance saw the left-hander drag the ball onto his stumps. It seemed that England were 76-5, with Stokes having been dismissed for 1.

But as Stokes was walking back to the dressing room, the call came through from the third umpire that the bowler had overstepped.

Stokes’ reprieve saw him bat through to tea, when he was unbeaten on 15 off 49 alongside Joe Root, who was not out on 23. De Grandhomme, on the other hand, was forced to leave the field before completing his fourth over after pulling up with an injury.
