Bangladesh registered their first home Test victory over New Zealand, beating them by 150 runs in the first of the two Test matches today (December 2).
New Zealand started their run-chase of 332 on the afternoon of day four and were pushed to the backfoot by the end of it. They started the final day at 113-7, hoping for a miracle that could either see them through the day or take them to the target.
It wasn’t to be though, as Taijul picked two of the three wickets to fall on day five, finishing with six wickets in the innings. In the first innings, he had picked another four wickets, resulting in a match-haul of 10-184, making it his second ten-for in Test cricket.
Among the ten wickets that Taijul took, two were those of Kane Williamson. In the first innings where Williamson scored a hundred, Taijul got the second new ball to skid through with the arm to shatter his stumps, while in the second innings, he got another full delivery to go through with the arm and strike him plumb in front of the wickets.
The on-field umpire didn’t take much time to raise his finger. Williamson reluctantly went for the review but started walking as soon as he saw the replay. His was the second wicket to fall in New Zealand’s second innings, as they were reduced to 19-2 in ten overs.
This wasn’t the first occasion where Taijul got rid of one of the famed ‘Fab Four’ in Test cricket. In fact, with Williamson’s wickets in this Test, Taijul completed the quartet, having dismissed Joe Root in a Test in Mirpur in 2016, Steve Smith twice in a Test in Chittagong in 2017, and Virat Kohli twice (2017 and 2022).
