Bangladesh, 1-0 up in the two-match series, won the toss, opted to bat first, and were bowled out for 172 on the first day of the second Test, largely due to a 57-run fifth-wicket partnership between Mushfiqur Rahim (35) and Shahadat Hossain (31).
The New Zealand spinners – Glenn Phillips (3-31), Mitchell Santner (3-65), and Ajaz Patel (2-54) – shared eight wickets.
The Bangladesh spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam, took over after an over from pacer Shoriful Islam and continued for the rest of the day. The New Zealand openers added 20 before perishing in the space of six balls.
Kane Williamson made 13 when Mehidy flighted a ball outside the off-stump. The ball perhaps bounced more than Williamson had expected it to. He tried to keep it down and almost succeeded in the effort.
As the ball descended, so did Shahadat at forward short-leg. It was not easy, for he had already semi-committed towards his left. He still stuck out his right hand, and the ball stuck.
Two balls later, Mehidy took out Tom Blundell as well. At stumps, New Zealand were 55-5, with Daryl Mitchell on 12 and Phillips on five. Mehidy had figures of 3-17 at close of play and Taijul 2-29.
