Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first in the first game of the three-match ODI series. Mustafizur Rahman opened the bowling for the hosts and was brilliant with the new ball, taking two wickets in his first spell to rock New Zealand.
Both the wickets Mustafizur took came in a similar manner as he got Finn Allen and Chad Bowes to edge behind through to the wicketkeeper Nurul. While Bowes’ catch was a relatively routine one, Nurul had to dive full length to catch Allen.

Mustafizur bowled a back-of-a-length ball pitching on leg stump and angling away from the right-handed Allen, who pushed at it only to get a thick outside edge that threatened to go between the wicketkeeper and second slip. Nurul, however, was alert and dived full length to his right to catch the ball with both hands and give Bangladesh their first breakthrough in the seventh over of the innings.
Mustafizur then got Bowes in a similar fashion in his next over, the ninth of the innings, to leave New Zealand reeling at 16-2. A 97-run partnership between Will Young and Henry Nicholls then steadied the ship for the visitors before Nicholls was dismissed for 44 in the 28th over of the innings, with New Zealand’s score reading 113-3.
Only around six more overs were possible as rain came down in the 34th over of the New Zealand innings to wash the match out.
